Vanilla at a decade low, ube exports halted

· 2 min read

Vanilla is the cheapest in ten years. The Philippines has suspended fresh ube exports indefinitely. Durban is still recovering from August. Three problems.

Three raw-material stories worth knowing about, pulling in different directions.

Vanilla is cheap

Importer market reports put 2026 vanilla prices at their lowest in a decade. Madagascar set an official minimum for green vanilla in June 2026, with export minimums around $50/kg. As of October, certified Madagascar Grade A trades roughly $60–120/kg FOB and Indonesian Grade A around $50–90/kg.

Treat those as indicative — they come from vendors, not an exchange, and vanilla is a market where the spread between grades and origins is wide enough to make any single number misleading.

The practical point: if a product was reformulated away from real vanilla when prices were at their peak, this is the window to look at that decision again. Vanilla is one of the few materials where the natural article and the substitute are genuinely distinguishable to a consumer, and the economics that forced the substitution have moved.

Ube has stopped

On 13 October the Philippines indefinitely suspended exports of fresh ube, to protect scarce planting material. Processed forms such as ube powder remain exportable, but supply is likely to tighten and prices to rise.

There is a second problem underneath the first, and it predates the suspension: suppliers warn that a great deal of "ube" sold abroad is actually purple sweet potato or dye. If you are buying an ube flavour or an ube-coloured system, authenticity documentation is not pedantry — it is the difference between a product claim you can defend and one you cannot.

Cloves, and the paperwork that travels with them

On 5 October the FDA found Indonesia's radioactive caesium (Cs-137) import certification programme to be working as required. That is good news in the sense that the system functions, but it does not remove the obligation: clove and spice buyers still need shipment-specific certificates from Indonesia's food authority.

And getting any of it through Durban

Durban Gateway Terminal handles 46% of South Africa's port traffic. It beat its targets for the first six months of the year, then performance dropped sharply in August after a switch to new control software. The transport minister visited on 3 October; short-term fixes included waiving storage charges, and Transnet said it would hold structured engagements with customers on truck bookings, cargo movements and terminal performance.

If you import aroma chemicals or raw materials, build in extra lead time. A formulation that depends on a material arriving on schedule is a formulation with a risk in it that has nothing to do with chemistry.
